Episode 01 · The tests

Test first. Then train.

David Katz, our global marketing manager, is working back to multiple marathons and another Comrades. “Running’s like my go-to,” he says. For years, work and children kept him on shorter runs. That road still took him to Comrades in 2013.

He knows what happens past the half marathon: “Anything after 21, I find, is a different game changer in your body. You’ve got to be prepared.”

So before the training starts, Zach van Heerden tests him: body composition, gait, a three-stage treadmill test and a one-leg balance test that ends with Zach asking, “You felt the wobble?” All of it after David lost two weeks of training to illness.

If there’s a problem with the body, we need to go and fix it. The only way you fix it is by going into the gym and also nutrition.

Episode 02 · The results

The good, the bad and the ugly.

In episode 02, Zach takes David through the results. “This is the part that always makes me nervous,” David says.

The good: his overall body composition score is 79%, “in the green”. The bad: “a few key issues which have been with you for a long time,” says Zach, starting with the right hip. What Zach prescribes for it is in the episode.

“It’s not an indictment of you in any way,” Zach tells him. “Our objective is injury prevention.”

Three things to take from it

Rules from Zach you can use today.

●Shoe working for you? Stay in it. “Not broken. Don’t fix it.”
●New race shoes get a quarter of their life before race day, not more. That is 200 km on an 800 km shoe.
●Gym work and running go hand in hand. And “there’s only one person who knows a runner’s body really well and that’s the runner themselves.”

The nutrition half

Feed the work you do in the gym.

David’s next step is strength work on that right hip. Zach’s rule for the food side: “make sure you’re getting proper protein loading at the right time of day with the right stimulus from training, everything starts to improve.”

Two shakes help with that. Protein for every day, Recover for after the hard sessions.
